🐘 3-Day Kenya Safari: Tsavo East & Amboseli

3 Days 2 Nights

Overview

This 3-day safari is a perfect short escape into Kenya’s wild, combining the vast red landscapes of Tsavo East National Park with the iconic elephant-filled plains of Amboseli National Park. Ideal for travelers staying along the coast in Watamu or Malindi, this journey offers a rich introduction to African wildlife, diverse ecosystems, and breathtaking scenery—including views of Mount Kilimanjaro. In just three days, you experience two completely different safari environments, each with its own unique wildlife behavior and landscapes.

Day 1: Watamu / Malindi to Tsavo East National Park

Your adventure begins early in the morning as you depart from the coast, driving through local villages and the edge of the famous Arabuko Sokoke forest, one of the last remaining coastal forests in East Africa. As you approach Tsavo East National Park, the scenery changes dramatically to open plains covered in red soil, which gives the park its famous “red elephants.”

A short stop at the Galana River introduces you to crocodiles and hippos before you enter the park for your first game drive. As you explore, your guide will help you understand how animals survive in this dry ecosystem, where water sources determine wildlife movement. Expect to see elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, and antelopes roaming freely. After lunch and some relaxation at your lodge, you head out again for an afternoon game drive, when predators begin to emerge as temperatures cool. Dinner and overnight are spent inside the park, surrounded by the sounds of the African wilderness.

Day 2: Tsavo East to Amboseli National Park

After an early breakfast and a short morning game drive, you leave Tsavo East and journey inland toward Amboseli National Park. Along the way, you’ll notice a striking change in landscape—from dry red plains to lighter, dust-covered terrain fed by underground water from Mount Kilimanjaro.

Arriving in Amboseli, you check into your lodge and prepare for an afternoon game drive in one of Africa’s most photogenic parks. Known as the “Land of Giants,” Amboseli is famous for its large elephant herds, and here you will learn about their social structures, migration patterns, and conservation efforts. The park’s swamps attract a variety of wildlife, including hippos and countless bird species. As the day ends, the sight of elephants walking against the backdrop of snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro creates one of the most iconic safari scenes in Africa. Dinner and overnight are at your lodge.

Day 3: Amboseli to Watamu / Malindi – Departure

Your final day begins with an early morning game drive, the best time to witness wildlife at its most active. The cool morning air often provides the clearest views of Mount Kilimanjaro before clouds gather later in the day. After breakfast, you begin your journey back to the coast, passing through rural landscapes and local communities, giving you a glimpse into everyday Kenyan life beyond the parks.

You arrive in Watamu or Malindi in the late afternoon, marking the end of a short but deeply enriching safari filled with wildlife encounters, scenic beauty, and unforgettable moments.
